Chef Sarah Penrod is a Food Network Star and hometown girl with a bestselling cookbook, The Urban Cowgirl. She is a 3rd generation chef who relishes her connection to the land, the seasons and modern Texan cooking. Using fresh, local ingredients from the CFM, Chef Sarah will demo and sample a recipe while chatting about her favorite food adventures in and around North Texas.

Cooking is just in her blood, growing up with grandparents who owned two North Texas restaurants, made their own wine from wild grapes, smoked hogs and had an enormous truck-patch garden. Weekends were spent making jam, chutney and pickles. Her great grandmother Thelma set up the very first school lunch in the area in Crossroads, Texas. She cooked for the children on a pot belly stove!

To Chef Sarah, this living history reinforces how important it is to eat local. She reiterates that it tethers you to the identity of a location since local ingredients come only from that place – that it defines a region and connects those who live there together.

When asked why seasonal produce is paramount to her, she says, “Because it tastes better! And I don’t actually like the idea that I can get any ingredient at any time of the year, if I am willing to sacrifice flavor. When we eat purple hulled peas fresh from the pod or a 3rd generation recipe for green tomato jam, that is something special! And special usually doesn’t come on demand. In fact, it gives us something to look forward to in the season to come, and reminds us to appreciate the season that we are in.”

Chef Sarah’s cooking style is modern Texan with a feminine twist, but with recipes that are terrific for anyone. Classically trained at Le Cordon Bleu Scottsdale, she is a professional private chef who helps people live a better life through a healthy whole foods diet, whether it is heart healthy, paleo, veggie/vegan or just busy family style and kid friendly.
