What’s Fresh – June 14

Farmers report baskets of mixed vegetables, mixed peppers, and jalapenos as new this week.

Recently available spring and summer vegetables include bok choy, broccoli, kohlrabi, and cabbage; green, red, and cherry tomatoes; flat and round snap green beans; pinto beans in the pod to cook similarly to green beans; squashes like patty pan, zucchini, eight ball, and yellow summer; and pickling and slicing cucumbers.

Root vegetables are rainbow carrots, leeks, garlic, elephant garlic, onions, beets, turnips, and red potatoes. Herbs may include cut versions or plants of cilantro flowers, mint varieties, oregano, basil, dill, fennel, parsley and chives. Lettuces, wheat grass, arugula, micro greens mix, Swiss chard, and kale have been found in the leafy green selection. Chard, green onions, and kale are winding down for this season.

Summer berries and peaches are in, juicy and ripe ready to eat fresh now or preserve for the out of season months. The short season blackberries need to be purchased now at this local, seasonal market. Blueberries and possibly strawberries will be around a little longer.

This is the first year the market has had Texas cherries. White fleshed freestone peaches and red-fleshed cling peaches are great for jams and cobblers. Now is the time to can or freeze any of these for cobblers, pancakes, and coffee cakes in the winter months.

Farmers bring what they find ripe on Friday so there may be some surprises. Some produce is raised organically, others sustainably but not organic, some use conventional practices. Ask the farmer if this is important to your family.

Ranchers bring pastured, grass raised and finished beef and lamb, pastured pork, free range chicken and eggs, goat and cow artisan cheeses, and Texas Gulf seafood.

Artisan bakeries bring pies, breads, rolls, cookies, and macaroons. Other artisan producers bring a wide spectrum of honey, pasta, grains, chips, salsa, tamales, lemonade, coffee, chocolate truffles, small batch prepared foods and mixes, relishes, Texas olive oil, dressings, and more. Granola flavor for June is cherry vanilla.

Doggie biscuits, soaps and lotions from natural ingredients add to the artisan mix. Herb, vegetable, and sun and shade color plants are also for sale.
