National Farmers Market Week is August 7-13, 2016. In celebration, the Coppell Farmers Market will host two FREE educational events on Saturday, August 13th!
10:00am Presentation: Produce Storage and Zero Waste. Guest speaker and Zero-Waste enthusiast, Texas Farmer Gal, will teach consumers how to get the most from their farmers market purchases. She’ll share her favorite produce storage methods and touch on cooking with parts of produce that are commonly trashed or composted. The presentation will take place in the large grassy lawn next to the market pavilion, shade and chairs will be provided.
10:30am POP Club Kickoff! Garden Time and Craft for Kids. National Farmers Market week is the perfect time to kick of our latest children’s education program, Power of Produce (POP) Club. This program awards our youngest customers with $5.00 vouchers to be spent at the Coppell Farmers Market, empowering them to make healthy food choices on their own by having the direct buying power. The POP Club will meet at 10:30 am during What’s Growing, the farmers market’s weekly garden time for kids. Garden time will conclude with a make-and-take vegetable craft. All participants will be awarded a $5.00 voucher!
Need more reason to celebrate National Farmers Market Week? Farmers markets are more than just an outlet for fresh produce and friendly farmers. According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics, these grassroots venues have increased in number by over 60% since 2009 to more than 8,500 today. These markets preserve farmland, stimulate local economies, increase access to fresh nutritious food, improve community health, and promote sustainability. For example, growers selling locally create thirteen full time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned while those that do not sell locally only create three.
