Since the market’s conception in 2003, site visits have helped us build community with our farmers and producers, and just as importantly, they’ve allowed us teach farmers market shoppers about the source of their food.
During these visits we learn about our vendor’s practices, and their dedication to local food. The CFM steering committee and market manager are committed to visiting each farmer on as many as three separate occasions (once each spring, summer and fall). Recently we visited two veggie farms Aunt Sue’s Barn and Elliott Grows, and our newest dairy, Lucky Layla Dairy and Creamery. A photo journal of our visits can be viewed from the home page of our website. Although each of these farms and their stewards are so different from one another, they have one thing in common: working really hard to produce high quality food for the community.
Aunt Sue’s Barn is a berry farm located in Ponder, TX. Owner Sue Newhouse purchased the 10 acres about 15 years ago when it was just pasture land. Since then she’s lovingly planted many oak, elm and fruit trees and rows of food-producing perennials. She gives the same quality of care to each picked berry and the products she makes with them.

Elliott Grows is the business of two dedicated folks who have fine-tuned the hydroponic production of nutrient dense, green vegetables. They produce a high volume of food in a small space. Mastering the construction and maintenance of an intricate set up, along with the science of feeding sea minerals (instead of synthetics), have been important factors in their success.

We visited one of the two sites that comprise Lucky Layla, the farm and creamery located in Plano. Their pasture raised Jersey and Guernsey cows are milked twice each day. While producing product of good virtue is important to the farm, they are tremendously invested in promoting a come-back of milking Guernsey cows; the breed is becoming extinct despite producing milk that’s high in butterfat and protein.
